How to search someone’s tweets

On iOS, some Twitter users are starting to get access to a feature that allows them to search for a specific user’s tweets. When viewing a user’s profile, those with access will notice a search icon next to the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the screen on the user’s profile banner. Then, to search the user’s tweets, type in keywords. According to TechCrunch, this feature is available to all iOS users worldwide and will be gradually rolled out to web and Android users.

Even so, if you don’t know how to perform an advanced search, it would be much easier to use the search button to look for “Twitter” on TechCrunch’s account rather than scrolling through dozens of daily tweets to find what you’re looking for.

How to use the advanced search feature

Use the search bar on twitter.com to find what you’re looking for.

On the upper right of your results page, under Search filters, click Advanced search, or click More options, then Advanced search.

To fine-tune your search results, fill in the appropriate fields (see below for some helpful tips).

To see your results, click Search.

You can refine your search results using advanced search by using any combination of the fields below:

Words

All words in any position in a tweet (“Twitter” and “search”)
Exact phrases in tweets (“Twitter search”).
Tweets with the words “Twitter” or “search” in them
Excluding specific words (“Twitter,” but not “search”) from tweets
Tweets containing the hashtag (#twitter)
Tweets that are written in a specific language (written in English)

People

Tweets from a single account (sent by “@TwitterComms”)
Tweets sent in response to a specific account (e.g., “@TwitterComms”).
Tweets that include the hashtag “@TwitterComms” and mention a specific account.

Places

Tweets sent from a specific location, such as a city, state, or country.
To select a geographic location, use the place dropdown menu.

Dates

Tweets sent on a specific date, after a specific date, or within a certain time frame
Select a “from” date, “to” date, or both from the calendar dropdown.
Since the first public Tweet, you can search for Tweets from any date.

Searching by hand

For a long time, Twitter allowed users to manually search for tweets from specific accounts. However, it wasn’t very user-friendly, and the results were mixed. You had to search “from:[Twitter handle] [search term]” in the Twitter search bar. As an example, consider the following:

Profiles are used to search.

Twitter has added a new search button to profile pages to make it easier to find that one tweet from years ago. This button allows you to search for tweets from the profile you’re looking at. The new search button first appeared for users in September 2021, according to social media consultant Matt Navarra. XDA Developers noticed it had rolled out to everyone who uses Twitter’s iOS app a month later.

Here’s where you can look for the new search button:

  1. Open the Twitter app in its most recent version (iOS only).
  2. Go to the profile of a user.
  3. Look for the magnifying glass in the cover photo area (next to the … menu button).
  4. The magnifying glass should be tapped. It’s the brand-new search function.
  5. Enter the keywords you want to look for in the user’s previous tweets.

Using an Email Address or a Phone Number to Locate Someone on Twitter
Even if you enter your friends’ phone numbers or email addresses into the app, you may be unable to locate them if their Twitter account privacy settings prevent their accounts from being found using their contact information.

Tap the Menu button in the top left corner of any tab.

Select Privacy and security from the drop-down menu under Settings and privacy.

Scroll down and tap Contacts and Discoverability.

Switch the Sync address book contacts switch on.

The Twitter app will then display all of the Twitter accounts that are linked to your contacts.

Using the Who to Follow feature on Twitter

You’ll be using the Who to Follow feature on the Twitter desktop website if you’re using the Twitter.com website to find suggestions for Twitter accounts to follow:

If you haven’t already, go to the Twitter website and log in to your account.

Find the Who to Follow section on the right-hand side of your Twitter account’s home page.

You can either select an account from the limited list of suggestions in this section, select Show more to see more accounts, or select View all to see all of the suggestions on a single page.

Select Follow next to an account’s name to follow their tweets once you’ve found one you like.
