With its new feature for sharing music via scannable images, Spotify has taken a page from Snapchat. For every song, album, artist, and playlist, the new Spotify Codes feature generates a unique barcode and album cover image. Scanning these Spotify Codes with the new camera in the Spotify app’s search bar will allow you to listen to the music right away.
Spotify Codes have the potential to make it easier for friends to share music and for artists to promote their work. We contacted Spotify for more information after receiving a tip from reader Moshe Isaacian, and the company said it would share more details on Monday.

What Is a Spotify Code and How Do I Use It?
A Spotify Code is a one-of-a-kind code for Spotify’s music streaming service. It functions similarly to a QR code but has a completely different appearance.
There are no restrictions on what you can share because each track, artist, album, and playlist can have its own Spotify Code.
When you’ve found the code for the content you want to share, click it to enlarge it. If you’re with the person you want to share the content with, they can use their Spotify app to scan the code. Alternatively, you can save the image to your photos and send it to someone else to open in the Spotify app for them.
Use the camera button to the right of the search bar in the Spotify app to scan a code. Accept the permissions for Spotify to access your camera by tapping “Scan.” You’ll be able to scan artwork from someone else’s device at that point.
You can use “Select From Photos” if you’ve been sent an image. Find the image in your library, open it, and press “Choose” to be whisked away to whatever it was shared with you by Spotify.
How do I get my hands on Spotify Codes?
Free and Premium Spotify subscribers can use Spotify Codes. To generate a code for something you’d like to share, click the three dots next to the heart icon on whatever you’d like to share. This button is available for all albums, tracks, playlists, and artists.
You’ll see options like download (if you’re a Premium subscriber), share, and like after clicking the three dots. However, beneath the artwork at the top, there is a Spotify Code.
Is there anywhere else I can use Spotify Codes?
Spotify codes don’t have to come from a third party. Codes can be printed on promotional advertising boards and posters by artists, record labels, and brands, and they can be scanned in the same way.
Using the Spotify Desktop App, create a Spotify Code (Windows and Mac)
- Open the Spotify Desktop app or web player and select the song from your library to share. Now, select ‘Share -> Copy Song Link’ from the horizontal three-dot menu next to the song listing.
- Copy the song’s link and paste it into the textbox on the Spotify Codes website (visit), then click “Get Spotify Code.”
- Now the website will generate a scannable Spotify code for the song you requested. From the tools on the right side of the page, you can change the background colour, bar colour, size, and image format (SVG, PNG, JPEG). To save the Spotify code, click ‘Download’ after you’ve finished.
In Spotify for Mobile, create a Spotify Code.
Use the Spotify app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone to create scannable codes.
To begin, go to your phone’s app store and download the Spotify app. Find the item for which you want to create a code in the app, then tap the three dots next to it.
The artwork for your selected item will be at the top of the page that opens after tapping the three dots. The Spotify code at the bottom of this artwork can be scanned by others to locate your item.

After you’ve learned how to make a Spotify code, you’ll want to learn how to scan QR codes with Spotify’s mobile app.
- From the bottom navigation bar, tap the “Search” icon, then type in the search box at the top. A camera icon should now appear in the top-right corner of the search box on the screen.
- Now press the “Scan” button and point your camera at the Spotify code that appears. If the code is in your phone’s gallery, select it using the “Select from photos” option. The Spotify app will take you to the song, artist, podcast, or playlist that the scanned Spotify code corresponds to.
